During his service in the war, McCrae was moved by the sight of the countless graves of soldiers who had died in battle, and in May 1915, he wrote "In Flanders Fields," a poem that has since become a symbol of remembrance for fallen soldiers. The poem was first published in December 1915 in the British magazine Punch, and it quickly became popular throughout the Allied countries.
